After sitting out a spell, I returned my attention to Flutter this weekend. After all the cotton and synthetic, though soft, this blend of alpaca and silk was like magic through the fingers! I couldn’t put it down.
Flutter by Miriam Felton
Capistrano Fiber Arts handdyed 70% baby alpaca/30% silk 2-ply in ‘Peacock’, 280 yds (80 g)
US6
Size: 6 inches by 4 feet
Mods: To accommodate reduced yardage and heavier weight yarn, reduced cast on by one repeat of lace column, did 30 repeats of pattern in each half (instead of 50), and did not knit last 2 rows of last chart before bind off.
It’s just long enough to knot around the neck for light warmth. And it is heaven against the neck. I’m really glad I matched this yarn to this pattern. I love the color, drape, and feel, and I think the very slight tonal variegation keeps the color from being overpowering.
I think this is a genius pattern, so beautiful in its simplicity. It makes the most of simple geometric shapes without being either too angular or boring. I can’t say I’m a big lace shawl gal, but the ones I do want to make are almost all Mim’s patterns.
Christmas in July August
This weekend I also made a small start on holiday prezzies. Partly so that I don’t have to rush later. But also because I am stymied about what projects for me I want to cast on next. I had some picked out, yarn in bags and everything, earlier in the summer, but now I am thinking of other things.
First up is a Quinn bag in taupe Cotton Ease:
This is a lovely and clever pattern from Cogknition, a very detailed, 9-page pattern. The first step is a “loop” from which the body of the bag is picked up perpendicular to the loop and knit down in the round.
The cables are provided both as charts and written directions, and every step is literally numbered from beginning to end. There is alot of cabling going on, but there are not difficult cables. With the detailed directions and clear charts, I would feel fine suggesting this as a pattern for a knitter brand new to cables. And cabling without a cable needle is a real time-saver if you can swing it!
The only drawback for me is that working this up in cotton, and in a slightly tighter gauge as recommended, is a hand workout and a half. On retrospect, it’s extra good I started this early, as it will allow be to work on it in occasional bursts between other projects.
“New York, New York” (sung as only SInatra could)
Another aspect to complicate my knitting plans is that I will be visiting New York at the end of the month! I’m so excited. I haven’t been for a long time. A total of 6 days, including travel. N was hired for a job, which was then scheduled right over my birthday. So, he said, “why don’t you come with?” Why not, indeed. The company that hired him we know personally as well, and they have wives/children/significant others tag along on shoots here and there. They and the producer said it was fine, so all I had to pick up was a plane ticket!
So N will be working part of each day, and I will therefore be out and about on my own a good chunk of the time. But we have a sublet on the Upper West Side, walking distance to Central Park, the Met and the Natural History Museum. And the first night he has to work, I am so going out and getting bagels in the morning! But so far, those are the only definite plans I have. N assures that we will do something special on my bday, I’d like to have a picnic lunch in Central Park, weather permitting. Nothing grandiose, just memorable.
But, for residents and those with intimate NY knowledge, any special places to visit? I would like to hit a yarn store or two. I’m a little familiar and feel perfectly comfortable getting around and doing stuff on my own. But overall, I don’t plan to do much shopping, yarn or otherwise. To be frank, there’s relatively little I can get there that I can’t get here. I want to experience the feel of the place, the culture, the architecture, the people. Good food. I may go to Ground Zero, if I feel I can do so without getting verklempt. I may go anyway.
And, what to knit? I am perplexed. It will be hot, muggy and potentially even rainy. Unpredictable at least. Nothing too woolly or sticky then. I will be walking and/or on the go alot, so nothing heavy. But nothing too complex either. And I’m not feeling the sock love, which would normally be the answer.
Any thoughts on any of the above are very welcome!

Love that scarf — what a great colour, and very prettily photographed.
New York — what fun! I’ve only ever been once, for ten days back almost twenty years, and we loved it. It was mid-September when we went and the weather was perfect, altho’ there was one of those crazy downpours so that we ended up squelching our way into the Natural History Museum. Lucky you!
As a typical So Cal girl… I have no advice for NY. I plan to get there someday…. like I plan to experience “not LA” someday! Flutter is lovely! I thought that color might be a tad strong, but it turned out just right.
Go to Purl in Soho. Go to School Products. And go to Habu. I think those are the current best.
Eat at Cru. (Pricey but wonderful.)
I say ditto for the yarn shops mentioned above, and add The Point to the list. You can walk there from Purl and take in all of the over priced shops and NYU students that Soho has to offer
My sister just visited the Natural History Museum and had a great time. Knitting there would be a good escape from the heat too. Since you’re near Central Park you could try to run into one of the Sit and Knit NY meetings during your stay.
Be prepared to be extremely overwhelmed at Ground Zero. I have lived in NY my entire life and had a view of the towers from my window while growing up and during the attack. I’m still not used to the site of that empty space.
Ooh! Flutter is beautiful! And- NYC on your birthday? How fabulous! I heart museums, so I like to hit up The Met (I never tire of that place), MOMA and the Guggenheim, oh and whatever else you do, you MUST go to Magnolia Bakery in the West Village. For b-day cupcakes! And, eat one for me while you’re at it!
Flutter came out very pretty. The color will look great on you.
Aw, New York. My favorite city. I love picnics in Central Park. There’s a Whole Foods at Columbus Circle right across from the park. Perfect for grabbing some good food for lunch. If you like books, visit The Strand. There’s a good restaurant called Eat that I liked and was reasonable. We went to breakfast and lunch there. If I think of anything else, I’ll let you know. We’re going in November, so I’ll welcome suggestions after your trip.
Flutter looks great! A former partner lived in NYC when I lived in Vermont. I’d visit every month for the weekends. Such a great place to visit! Have fun – can’t wait to see the pics.
Love, love, love the photos of Flutter. Such a beautiful and feminine scarf!
NY city! Whoo Hoo! You will have a wonderful time. I’ve only been once, but they have wonderful brazilian restaurants and that is my food recommendation – that and a slice of NY cheese cake, of course.
Well, you don’t leave us much choice for your knitting take-along. But, since this is all about projection, I would take a cute pair of fingerless mitts to work on.
what a perfectly beautiful scarf !!! the way it is captured on film is stupendous !!! magnolia cupcakes !!!!! yeah
Flutter is beeyootiful!
I knit on my commute and find that simple lace projects are the best–such as one using a leaf lace motif, for example. They don’t take up much room and you don’t have to refer to a pattern. A lace stole or scarf is usually knit in two pieces making it even more portable.
There are so many great places to go in NYC–off the top of my head I would suggest the New Museum of Contempory Art, ABC Carpet and Home, Tender Buttons, Chinatown for dim sum, the West Village (just go hang out in one of many little corner cafes).
I cannot go to NYC without a trip to Yonah Schimmels Knishery (137 E. Houston St)–it’s an institution. Be prepared, however, it was opened in 1910 and I don’t think they’ve done a thing to it since. The knishes and other treats are wonderful, though. If you’re tastes run more toward the Italian, go to Veniero’s Pastry Shop (342 E. 11th St)–it’s a lovely, venerable place in addition to having delicious stuff.
You’re lucky–a whole week! I’ve never been able to spend that much time there.
I’ll only tell you the best yarn stores if you promise to meet up with me!
Well, it seems like the best NYC stores have been mentioned already: Habu, School Products, Purl… I’ve never been to Knitty City, but it’s on the UWS.
That scarf is absolutely gorgeous! The shape, the drape, the colour! Wow. I think you have managed to reinspire my knitting! I have spent a bit of time looking t similar patterns and thinking about what’s in my stash… I think I might have to cast on for something new even though I desperately want these socks off the needles!
How does it look on the wrong side?
And lookit you starting the gift knitting already!
Cross your fingers, and it won’t actually be that hot or humid in NYC. Speaking as a Jersey girl, this summer really hasn’t been that bad…or at least not consistently bad.
I don’t know NYC well enough to suggest many places beyond what I saw above…but I will say that the cheesecake at Carnegie Deli (52nd and 7th Ave, I think? Somewhere around there) is bar none.
I think I want some now.
Have a wonderful trip!
Ooh, NYC on your birthday. Fab. I’d recommend Artisinal (2 Park Ave. at 32nd St., New York, NY 10016), as long as you make a reservation. And I just told Annette about Fishs Eddy, the coolest dishware/kitchen store in the world, and now I have to tell you, too! (http://www.fishseddy.com/) And it’s been years since I’ve been, but the Beauty Bar back in the day was kitschy fun. (http://www.beautybar.com) And I always love the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.
Once again Lori Lawson knocks it out of the park…beautiful Flutter.
Flutter is beautiful! The purse is looking very nice too.
I’ve been to NY to visit family so often that we always go to the same place–Chinatown. It’s bigger than LA’s and much more crowded.
Oh and have a fun trip and Happy Birthday!
Beautiful scarf!
“After all the cotton and synthetic, though soft, this blend of alpaca and silk was like magic through the fingers!”
I hear ya
It’s lovely Jillian! I’m glad you enjoyed knitting it and found a way to make it work with that yarn. It’s such a beautiful color!
[...] be done by the end of the week (I get so distracted and I’m so slow with the knitting). But Jillian’s gorgeous Flutter scarf totally helped to reinspire me and I spent awhile browsing patterns last night in which to make [...]
The scarf is really pretty, Jillian. As for New York, I’ve never been, but it I ever get to go, I’m heading to Zabar’s for sun dried tomatoes and PurlSoHo for yarn! You’ll have the best time!
Flutter looks cute!
Mittens? Too wooly? Market bags?
Oh, I do love Flutter! It is on my que…I have yarn and all…robin egg blue. You have inspired me to get going on it!
Thanks and have a great time in N. Y.!
There you go again matching the perfect yarn with the perfect pattern. It’s so beautiful! No modeled shots though?
I’m sure you already know this, but Purl SoHo’s warehouse is right here in Orange County, and let me warn you .. their prices are a bit on the high side. I just went there on a local yarn crawl with friends. They do have some extremely yummy yarns though and I never walk out of there without a skein or two.
I’m sure your guy will plan the perfect birthday for you. He’s just that kind of guy. I will say that a picnic in Central Park does sound like heaven.
Flutter is just lovely!
NY is going to be so much fun. I’ve been to Purl Soho and it was a cute little shop. The weather on the east coast hasn’t been as notoriously awful as it normally is in the summer time, so you might luck out!
Flutter is gorgeous! Fall is so great for fun scarves.
My favorite place is the Natural History Museum. They have a Neanderthal exhibit that is so well done the figures look real. They even have leg hairs and dust on their knees. And of course the 80 ft tall Barosaurus mom tromping the allosaurs in the rotunda is awe-inspiring.
Have a great time!
The weather here has actually been gorgeous of late! Hope you have a blast on your trip! If you like Thai food, go to Klong in the Village. It’s on St. Mark’s Place, at the basement level. It’s sooo yummy!
Flutter is beautiful – and the smoothness of wool floating through my fingers after working with cotton never ceases to surprise me!
Flutter looks beautiful! Great combination of pattern and yarn
