Topaz and I thank you (meow!) for all the well wishes! Had I blogged earlier today, I would have said all was going according to plan. However, we just got back from another emergency vet visit.
Today, per the schedule, we took off the collar. The incision looked to be healing and he wasn’t fussing with it all that much. This afternoon we left for errands for 2 hours. Came back and got a big shock.
You guessed it. He opened the incision. Again.
Over an inch was open, red, and a bit angry looking. We looked at the clock (just after 4pm) and realized our vet’s office had just closed. We called anyway but got the service. At 4:15 we decided to just take Topaz there, and if no one was there take him to the emergency vet. The vet’s office is very near, you see, and we crossed fingers someone would still be there. We literally (but kindly) threw Topaz into his carrier and dashed to the car.
Our vet was there, and it was only him and a tech left. He agreed to see Topaz and took very good care of him. He is thinking that Topaz is being slow to heal because of the pre-diabetic condition he was so recently treated for. So, the collar will stay on another 10 days, and the course of antibiotics will continue. He said the staples can stay in almost indefinitely, unlike sutures, so if they have to stay in a month, a month it is.
I am thrilled to have so recently found this great vet – this was truly above and beyond. If anyone local wants in the know, it’s Dr. “K” at Raymond Avenue Veterinary Hospital. Of course I thanked him profusely, but I plan to bring some baked goodies by for everyone Monday on the way in to the office. I feel like even that is not enough.
Alright, enough pet drama, huh? Thank you for letting me go on about him.
On the knitting front, I’ve gotten a start on the Obstacles Lap Blanket this week.
I added 2 repeats width-wise to the stole-size pattern alternative, and, by weight, I think I’ll be able to go 8 or 9 repeats tall. I think it will be roughly 3 feet square. I’m finally getting to use my yummy ladybug stitch markers from Knitty K8 for larger needles!
This yarn, Schaefer Marjaana in the colorway Mary Breckinridge, has all my sis L’s favorite colors. (I believe Marjaana is discontinued, but there remains a selection for sale at Little Knits.) When I posted about my skein lo these many months ago, she even commented and said “those are all my favorite colors!” Plus, Mary Breckinridge is the nurse famous for founding the Frontier Nursing Service. L has been an RN for over 20 years. Clearly this yarn was destined for her!
I must tell you I have found my digital scale (basic one from Tar-gay) indispensable on this and Flutter for determining if I had enough yarn and estimating the ultimate size of the FO. Indispensable!
I also realized this week I never blogged that I frogged Briar Rose. After one “restart”, I was again making my way up the back and joining the arms, and I once again had different stitch counts on each front. There was something I was just not reading right about how to insert the decreases on either side of the sleeve. At that point, I was well and truly over it. Frog!
In knitty news, Zigzag Stitch Mandy has just released her first pattern for sale! Two by One, a corrugated rib hat. I think it’s nifty!
Also, WEBS has just started their anniversary sale, and it’s a 2-monther this time! There are some incredible deals, as always. I’m resisting, so far. Although I do have a WEBS gift cert marinating. I’m going on a yarn crawl next weekend (Happy pre-Birthday Madgester!) and I am saving my stash enhancing for then. At least I plan to. For now. Really.
Off to go give Topaz some smooches!

Sorry to hear of Topaz’s ongoing saga. Sounds like your vet merits a scarf or some other knitted goody
Maybe Topaz thought his wound was dirty and needed some cleaning. Poor thing. He’s sure added some adventures to see the vet.
That’s a great idea to turn that stole into a lap blanket. Hopefully it is more successful than Briar Rose. I’m so sorry to hear that even you run into troubles with patterns. It makes me feel a bit more “normal” though.
I couldn’t resist WEBS yarn sale. I didn’t buy a lot, but my stash will be seeing a bit more Cascade 220 very soon.
I hope Topaz is on the mend now. Glad you have found a good vet.
Thanks, too, for the link! Happy Knitting!
Topaz, Topaz, Topaz! What is your mommy going to do with you? I’m so glad he has a caring, loving parent. Think of all of the animals who don’t. Heartbreaking. Thanks for all of the links to the great things to make! I love everything you pick. I love Anne’s patterns, and the blanket will be awesome. Your sister will love it. Head pat, Topaz!
Please give my best wishes for a speedier recovery to Topaz.
Phooey. I’ve been looking forward to reading about your experience with Bouton D’or Dandy. I bought several balls when I was new to knitting. Everything I’ve knit with it started looking ratty and pilly before the project was even finished. Most of it has been frogged, but I can’t bring myself to get rid of the yarn. A bolero to wear around the house sounded promising.
BAD KITTY !!!!!! so nice to take something for your vet…i do that too !!! thank goddess you were not gone longer and your vet was there…………xoxoxoxo p.s.s. beautiful throw………….
naughty topaz! it is a blessing to have a vet like that – mine is like that too and i’m so glad i found him.
I’m sure that Topaz will now make a swift recovery! Very pretty yarn (gotta love Schaeffer). Too bad about Briar Rose – that’s a pattern I think about thinking on occasion. Thanks for the heads up on the Webs sale!
So glad to hear the kitty is doing well and that you have a great vet to trust… that does make a world of difference!
Poor Topaz, and poor you! Thank goodness for a good vet, is what I say! Your projects are looking great, as usual, and I’m joining you in resisting Webs’ sale. Of course, if I manage to make it East this month according to plan, I might succumb. There is something about that shop…
that is one great vet – stick with him!!!
i’m resisting webs too – that cascade 220 is calling my name though. it will be hard to not get any at that price!
the blanket is beautiful so far – the colors are amazing!
You have been busy! Oh, Topaz. See, if you keep re-injuring yourself, you will have to keep wearing that thing. Sigh. Glad everything is okay once again- your vet sounds awesome! Take care, Sknitty household!
Aww, poor Topaz. Hope he is better today. My dog Toby was at the vets for 3 days over Easter weekend. He must have gotten into something outside that knicked his colon and caused blood to come out his other end. It was scary, but he’s OK now. What we do for our precious pets!
I’m woefully behind in blog reading, and have missed the ongoing kitty drama. Tut tut, Topaz. I hope he’s healing okay now…and that you’re surviving the whole thing! Yay for good vets.
Thanks for the well wishes. I’m looking sooo forward to our yarn crawl. I’ve resisted the Webs sale, but will probably succumb; that’s a good price on Cascade 220, and I’m wanting to felt some bags in pretty, spring pastels. Have you succumbed?
