This weekend I had two moments of knitting serendipity in one day. And both involved hats.
I was up early Friday morning, and went to continue working on Briar Rose Bolero. I had been speeding along and had visions of it done this weekend. Then I noticed a boo boo. A big one. Several inches earlier when I had joined the arms to the body. Ripped and got it all back on the needles. But at that point, I really did not feel like working on it anymore.
Furthermore, for a variety of reasons none of my WIPs or even soon-to-be projects called to me. Hmphhh.
So I checked my Bloglines and came to read Nonnahs’ post concerning her sister. I had known about this sad and terrible situation, and was already wondering what I could do. Then, there it was. At the end of her post, Nonnahs asked if anyone could knit her sister a Knittyville hat, as she had requested one in grey or lime green and Nonnahs didn’t have the yarn to do it at the ready. Her belongings are all packed up for a move, including most of her knitting supplies.
Serendipity the first. I was lucky enough to be the first to comment and jumped at the opportunity to offer this small solace. I love that she knew she could reach out to this fabulous community, and that someone would offer. We conferred on yarns, and decided on Malabrigo in Lettuce, oh so soft and lime green!
Modified Knittyville hat from Stitch n’ Bitch Knitter’s Handbook. It took about 55g on US8 needles, the ears on US7. As I was working on this Friday afternoon, N found out a very good friend of his had a son that morning. I said “that calls for a hat”. And as I had the SnB book in my lap, I remembered how cute the Umbilical Hat pattern was. Serendipity the second.
40g of Blue Sky Cotton in Honeydew, US7 needles. Lickety split.
This streak continued as on Saturday evening I found out that my 14-month-old great-nephew simply will. not. leave. mittens on. He has cold little fingers. Well, no family of this knitter is going to go about with chilly appendages of any kind. My niece and I decided that thumbless mittens with a tie at the wrist and a connecting cord would be just the ticket. I’ve picked out some Artyarns Ultramerino 4 in camo colors (to match his boots!!!).
I’ve continued apace with Flutter. I paused when, by measure, I had used about 25% of my yarn. I wanted to steam and block to see what kind of length I would get.
About 13 inches. In the end, I think this will make a 4ish-foot Flutter. I’m OK with that, and any hesitation I might have had went thoroughly out the window when I handled the steam blocked fabric. Oh my, the drape. I wish there was feel-o-vision on this blog.

The hats are darling – particularly the kitty!
The hats are great, as is the Flutter, but the story about Nonnah’s sister (I went off to read the post) is sending me off to spend time with my loved ones — pretty moving. I’m glad you got, and took, the opportunity to provide some solace.
Thank you.
love you !!!!! x0×0x0x
love the kitty hat – what a great sentiment and a small way of contributing….
The hat are great, and Flutter is turning out very well
You are such a great person- those hats are wonderful and I’m sure will be much appreciated.
That was great of you to knit that hat for her. It looks great.
You made me laugh out loud twice. The phrases “chilly appendages” and “feel-o-vision” were very funny to me.
Oh, I was *so* confused at first!
You’re such a sweetie, Jillian! Knittyville, apart from being adorable, is such a wonderful gift. And, who doesn’t love that little umbilical cord hat? Love baby knits. Just finished a couple myself!
Thank you for doing something so sweet. The kindness of knitters never fails to amaze me. I love your photo of Topaz in the previous post. He looks so content.
Things have been extremely serendipitous for you. I love it when that happens. Those hats are adorable and oh Malabrigo. You can never go wrong knitting anything in Malabrigo.
I’m wishing for feel-o-vision as well!
Sweet hats with lots of love knitted in…wonderful gifts you’ve made for your friends!
Flutter is beeyouteefull.
so kind of you, jillian… all the projects look great
[...] DPNs, some hand lotion and chapstick, and that cool “blooming” tea. She also sent the Kittyville hat she knit for my sister (which she has worn most days since it arrived last Wednesday) and a thing of coffee [...]
