Finally a FO picture! We took advantage of the strangely sunny and warm weather the first half of yesterday to nab some outdoor photos.
Shedir by Jenna Wilson
- Catalina Yarns Baby Silk (baby alpaca/silk) in Claret (col. 505), about 60g
- US5 Options
- Mods: Went up 2 needle sizes, eliminated one pattern repeat at cast on, only 3 pattern repeats tall.
Love! Love the fit, the color, and the style. Although this hue does rather bring out the red undertones in my skin!
The cables don’t pop as much in this yarn as the Calmer or some other substitutes I’ve seen, but I still like the more subdued effect and the slightly fuzzy halo. To block, I just gave it a good shot of steam. It feels very nice on, not the slightest scratch factor and yet very warm.
With the mods to knit at a looser gauge and yarn substitute, I didn’t have too much trouble with the hands. There were times I had to put it down for a while after 4-5 rounds, but I think that was simply because of the intense stitchwork. A word on that – to look at the hat and/or chart one might think this was much more complicated than it in fact is. The entire hat is charted, which, if you happen to like charts is a great thing. But moreover, it is almost exclusively 2-stitch twists! I so enjoyed watching how the decreases came together at the top. Genius!
And (shyly) I admit that there’s a part of me that loves having a handknit that to the “public” eye would look very complicated.
I’ve finished my Foliage (FO post next) and started a Clapotis scarf. In black. Not terribly photogenic and I am quite sure you can all imagine exactly what that would look like. It is truly for practical purposes, to have a lovely soft black scarf that will match every other item!
I’ve been giving thought to selecting 10 blogs that Make my Day. I have such a hard time narrowing it down. I read many blogs and they are all entertaining, albeit in different ways. So I came up with some of my own “rules”. I’ve only picked blogs where I don’t really know the blogger in person, so it’s only knowing the blog; and I picked those blogs that make my day by their particular abundance of knitting creativity and technique and/or humorous, thoughtful or otherwise exceptional stories and writing. Oh yeah – pictures of adorable animals get me every time too. Could I have made that any more complicated?

In no particular order:
- What Housework?
- On and Off the Needles
- Fancie Pants Knits
- Brooklyn Tweed
- Materfamilias Writes
- Lolly Knitting Around
- Neither Hip Nor Funky
- TenTen Knits
- Skrilla Knits
- Flint Knits (we did meet “in real life” one day, but I still feel like I mostly know her from her blog)
The going rules are that this is then passed along to ten people. I have found many great new blogs from other’s lists! But this has been so prevalent just of late, that I would say make this optional!

Thank you, and what a great hat!
Your hat looks wonderful!
I’m so tickled to have you pick my blog as one that Made your Day!
And I love your Shedir hat. Those mods seem to have turned out very well. I’ve knit two in Zara with no mods and found they fit a bit too loosely on me — although they look great on the guys I gifted them to. I agree with you about the pattern — a lot of sophisticated bang for the buck! As with the Koolhaas Hat, though, four or five rows at a time was about it before I started craving stockinette.
Yes, that spot of sunshine was great – it literally just started pouring up here (pouring by SoCal standards) You’re on an FO rolll! The hat looks great! Looking forward to seeing Foliage and Clapotis!
Are you drowning yet in all the rain? I feel like we are.
Your Shedir turned out beautiful. I also like to knit things that look complicated but aren’t. Oh well.. a girl can’t help it.
Thanks for introducing me to some new blogs. Not that I can keep up with my “regulars”, but it’s fun to see other talent that I didn’t know existed.

Yay! Shedir!
Cute hat – your mods worked out perfectly! I have a couple of hats I need to finish before our Winter expires – it’s so fleeting here in LA. I must surf too many blogs as I am familiar with most of your choices!
Wonderful hat – love the color. And thanks for the award! I don’t post pics of my doggies very often, but now that I know you like it, I will!
There’s something for you at my blog.
The Shedir is awesome! It looks so great with the necklace Nate bought you! I’ve had so much fun collecting new blogs. Thanks for your input.
